Because Amanda and Chad were flying to Cancun for a few days for an early celebration of their 15th wedding anniversary, I drove to Overland Park on Wednesday, 1/11 to stay with Peyton and Garrison while they were gone. I picked the kids up at their schools, then we went to their house until Amanda arrived home from work. I then took Peyton to piano lessons and Amanda took Garrison to swim lessons - Chad had to work late. We had dinner after we all arrived back home. Thursday, they left at 4 a.m. for the airport. I let the kids sleep in, and after breakfast, I took both of them to school.
I had Thursday during the day to myself, so I did a few things around the house. Kelly decided to drive up, arriving around 11 a.m., then we went to Joy Wok for lunch to celebrate her birthday which was on Wednesday. We went with me to run errands, then we picked the kids up at school and went to Burger King - their favorite - for dinner. Kelly went home right after dinner.
Because their was a big ice storm forecast to come in during the night Thursday night or Friday morning, Grandpa drove up to Overland Park to stay for the rest of the weekend with us. Peyton's school cancelled for Friday because of the ice storm (which never happened), and her dance was cancelled for Saturday, but we decided to go ahead and stay in OP as opposed to driving to Clinton for the rest of the weekend. Grandpa and Peyton drove to Lamar's for donuts Friday morning, and Grammy ran to Kohl's Friday morning, then we were in for the weekend!!!!
We had a great time playing games - well, most of the time except when we were getting whipped cream in our faces playing Pie in the Face - it was worth it to hear the giggles from the kids. We made lots of crafts, including salt pictures, one of their favorites and gel bracelets. Peyton gave us facials and did Grandpa's hair. There were laser sword fights. Peyton practiced piano 3 different times - a record - and read chapters of her book from the library to us out loud. I helped her with her essay, and she mastered her spelling words.
The kids spent time on the top bunk in Garrison's room, doing their "jobs" - who knows what that was, but they entertained themselves and didn't fight while doing it, no one was bleeding, so we were all happy!
Peyton made homemade chocolate pudding - Grammaw Mintun's recipe - for dessert for us with very little help. She liked separating the eggs and measuring the ingredients and was quite proud of her accomplishment.
We had chili for one meal, along with broccoli and strawberries - for some reason, they decided it would be a good idea to add the broccoli and strawberries to their chili for a special meal. At least they ate it all!
We decided to have a football party on Sunday for the Chiefs game, then it was moved to night, so most of our party was during the afternoon game! They wanted a picnic, so that is what we did. Peyton and I fixed cocktail weenies wrapped in bacon with brown sugar and syrup - one of her favorite - we had summer sausage and cheese/crackers, strawberries, chips and other football foods. They relaxed on the picnic blanket before we ate - lots of fun. They carried down the soda table and chairs for the American Girl dolls Peyton received for Christmas for their stuffed animals and dolls to join in the party. All weekend they did lots of just good old fashioned playing and fun - very little disagreements - only had to sit in their respective chairs one time, and it wasn't bad.
Amanda and Chad were expected home Sunday night, however, they only made it as far as Dallas, then their flight to KCI from Dallas was cancelled due to weather conditions. They spent the night at the Residence Inn near to the airport in Dallas and went back Monday morning trying to catch another flight with no success, so they rented a car and drove home. Garrison's school was in session, so we took him to school - Peyton was out for MLK Day. Grandpa, Grammy and Peyton carried out McDonald's for breakfast, then we went to the mall - by request from Peyton - to shop at Justice (she saw they were having a 30% off sale on my phone) and Bath and Body Works, also having a big sale. She found a few things for the cruise and a new dance workout outfit at Justice, and I bought a few things on 75% off at Bath and Body Works to have on hand for gifts. Then to Kohl's, Walmart and Hyvee - and The Egg and I for lunch before going back home. Grandpa went back to Clinton around 1 p.m. Peyton and I picked Garrison up at school about 3:45 p.m., picked up a hamburger for them and back home to wait for the parents to arrive.
Peyton was SOOOOOOO excited Mommy and Daddy were coming home - she had ballet class which we dressed for, but she wanted Mommy to take her. Luckily, they made it home right at 5 p.m. so she could take Peyton to dance. Then Grammy came home.
We had an absolutely awesome few days with Peyton and Garrison and made lots of wonderful memories. So happy Amanda and Chad were able to get home safely and that they had a great time - they came home with tans!!!!
We are blessed.
